Electromechanical Behaviors of HTS Conductors for Applications I + II

These two sessions are being organized to consider additional aspects of mechanical properties and those effects on superconducting properties, such as critical currents in HTS materials and applications, which will be subject to different modes of stress/strain, including wires/tapes, conductors and magnets. In addition to the electromechanical properties of bare wires/tapes, the stresses induced by transport current, current distribution in conductors and screening current, and deformation and stiffness of large conductors and magnets should be important topics in the session. Furthermore, the delamination characteristics of differently fabricated HTS REBCO tapes, which generally depend on the REBCO tape shape, including slitting and edge defects, are highlighted.

High Field Superconducting Materials for Accelerator Magnets I + II

These two sessions have a profound impact on science and human wellbeing. High current density, cost-effective Nb-Ti enables construction of high energy particle colliders for exploration of the scientific frontiers of energy and matter and makes possible the wide scale use of MRI for healthcare. At present, the high luminosity LHC project at CERN is leveraging higher-field Nb3Sn for its interaction region and future high energy proton colliders look to employ higher performance Nb3Sn and potentially very high field, high temperature superconductors to construct its main-ring dipole magnets. Nb3Sn and high-temperature superconductors including both Bi-2212 round wire and REBCO coated conductors have conductor characteristics that are much different from those of Nb-Ti and solutions are needed with cable design and coil fabrication etc. This symposium brings together top experts and young scientists in this field to discuss the history of high-field superconducting materials for accelerators, new ideas, the economy of superconductor production, and aims to provide a high-level discussion and a roadmap for the continuing development of this exciting field.

Orbital Flight Demonstrations of Cryogenic Fluid Management

The demonstration of microgravity performance for long duration storage and transfer of cryogenic propellants on orbit has been an observed gap in many Lunar and Martian Human space exploration plans. To help gather initial data to start closing this technology gap, NASA awarded multiple contracts for various levels of demonstrations of these technologies in microgravity using Public-Private Partnerships (https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/spacetech/solicitations/tipping_points/2020_selections). This session is being organized to provide high level overviews of the different awarded activities and provide progress updates.

Topological Materials for Electronics I, II, III, IV, V + VI

Topological Insulator materials exhibit unique characteristics of the interior behaving as an electrical insulator while its surface behaving as an electrical conductor, meaning that electrons can only move along the surface of the material. The surface states of topological insulators can also have exotic properties, such as spin locked at a right-angle to their momentum (spin-momentum locking), but the conduction on the surface is highly metallic. The most promising applications of topological insulators are spintronic devices and dissipationless transistors for quantum computers. Applications in advanced magnetoelectronic and optoelectronic devices have also been found practical. The symposium of Topological Materials for Electronics is aimed not only to have research progress reported by some leading experts in the field, but also to provide an opportunity for those experts and conference attendees to discuss important issues, technical challenges, and the future direction that the field may possibly take for technological realization.
